Introduction to PermacultureIT and Bram van Overbeeke

When it comes to blogposts, I’m not a hero. I feel I don’t really have anything to share. Perhaps this is because I don’t have an audience yet :)
What I would like to do here is write about what I envision for this website. One of the easiest ways to describe this is what I see when I close my eyes and fantasize or envision what it will be like.

When I think about what Permaculture IT will be in a few years I see a website where people can find every single event or product related to Permaculture. It is a community driven library crossed with a county fair crossed with an agenda and finally a garage.

People come here to find answers to simple questions like, “Where can I find my local meetups?”, or “What books are good for if you’re just starting out?” to “I’m looking for such an such a workshop, where can I find it?”. I see a close integration between email and the website, people receive new content on their doorstep, at the day and time they choose it.

People offer their skills as designers on The Fair, or their latest design for a Ram Pump, ready to be taken to the welding shop. I see an interactivity of different people with different interests, all joined by one simple concept: sharing information is easy these days, lets optimize is for the Permaculture community.

I see myself supporting and being of service to this community on Permaculture IT. My background has some IT in it, and I learn easily enough about these kinds of things. My main skill I guess is that I’m quite an ADD / hyperactive person. I come up with new ideas every hour of every day, and my challenge is going to to somehow channel this for the good of all involved! :)

As we’re on the topic of being honest about my intentions for this website I’d like to say that I intend to make my living through this website. What this will probably mean is that for some of the services I’m gonna ask for a small commission. Lets say that you’ve written a legal document for a business in Permaculture Design in Malaysia and want to sell it. You’ve put in a good amount of hours and research, perhaps even legal fees to your solicitor.
You can start a shop and start selling your legal document to provide a benefit for yourself and the community. All at no recurring cost to you. Simply set it and forget it. If someone buys your product, you get the money delivered to you automatically without having to lift a finger!

In return for hosting the files, taking care of all the payments and making and maintaining the website I would take a percentage of the sale. Right now  I’m thinking somewhere between 7 and 10 percent for digital sales. I need to do some more research on that, for that I would love your feedback!

It is also possible to post your events on this site, whether they are for free or paid events. You can add your events through the Share an Event! tab. Placing your event in our calender will ensure it gets broadcast to a wide audience and it will be possible to be found through the search engines. Permaculture IT is designed with search engine optimization in mind, so that people searching for courses or events will be able to find your event easily.
It is also possible to sell tickets to your events straight from The Fair. You can then add these tickets to your event listing and make it easier for people to sign up for your event without having to open their email inbox, click through different websites, start a paypal account if they don’t have one or any of a hundred other reasons they might not take the jump and join that amazing event you’re putting on.

Lastly I am developing a toolkit of tools useful to Permies, so you can imagine a tool that looks up your local rainfall, sunshine days, winter sun angle and stuff like that. Or a tool that helps you calculate how much greywater you and your family produce per day. Or perhaps the tool that will help you space the swales you want to build. If you have any suggestions I´d love to hear them!

So that´s the functionality of the website. This website will hopefully also be a website for me to learn to write and publish content of my own. I got into Permaculture in 2011 and it has taken me about 4 or 5 years to really pick it up as a profession! I want to show people how I´m doing it, so that I will be motivated to keep producing content and so that people might learn from my mistakes. And believe me I´ve made a lot of mistakes since I started! :D Another sneak peak into my intentions is that I might want to write a book, and writing publicly here will help me to get comfortable writing.
I also hope to teach Permaculture and become a consultant for hire. But first I want to build this website up to something amazing and for that I will need your help! Here’s what you can do:

I would like you to tell me about the challenges you face on your permaculture path, and I will see if I can help you lighten the load. Especially things to do with information technology, but anything that is researchable should be fine.

I want to help, but  not  just you! I want to help everybody that might search for that question in the future. So when you ask a question: by email, twitter, facebook or whatever. I will research the question and reply to you in a blogpost that will be public. This way your question will be answered, and anyone with more input can reply as well.

I will be putting all of my new content up on my email list. So if you want to stay in touch, please subscribe![wysija_form id=”1″]

I sincerely hope to hear from you, you can contact me here:
